Last-Minute Budget Ideas
It might be getting close to Christmas, but there are still budget holiday gifts you can pick up for your friends and family. You don’t have to spend a ton of money (or time for that matter) to show people you care about them.
- Idea #1: Make some holiday goodies.
I don’t care how experienced you are in the kitchen - this one is SUPER easy. Just buy some cookie mixes and follow the directions on the back. If that’s too hard, buy melting chocolate (which yes, is different than chocolate chips, which will burn in the microwave), some holiday-colored sprinkles, and a bag of pretzels. Melt, dip, sprinkle. If you can’t handle that…how did you make it through college… high school… kindergarten.
- Idea #2: Head to Blockbuster.
You can get up to FOUR movies for $20 at the BB. Some of them aren’t great, but there are good choices - I recently picked up Sweeney Todd, The Golden Compass, The Kite-Runner, and The Sex in the City Movie all for $20. There are also even more recent options for $10 each. Why the low price? They’re old copies they used to rent out when the movie was brand new and they needed 100 copies. It really doesn’t matter though. The BB stickers peel off really easily, and if there’s a problem with them, they exchange it. Blockbuster also has pre-owned video games, usually at a cheaper price than Gamestop.
- Idea #3: Offer your services.
Remember when, as a kid, you’d make up those coupon books for your parents. This coupon is good for one sink full of dishes. Come on, was I the only kid that did that? In any case, think of this gift as an adult version of that. Offer to do something for them that they’d typically pay to do - filing their taxes, servicing their car, etc.
